INDUMIL and Uniandes develop mine detection system

Investigation project

The Colombian Military Industry, INDUMIL, in association with the Universidad de los Andes, is developing the first Colombian dual mine detector that integrates a ground penetrating radar (GPR) and a metal detector, which will allow the men of the Armed Forces, locate not only mines made of metals, but also improvised explosive devices planted by terrorist groups in the fields of our country.

Since 2009, an interdisciplinary group of professors, researchers and master's and doctoral students from the University of the Andes, together with INDUMIL, have been developing the “Mine Detector System” project with the purpose of preventing terrorist actions and the use indiscriminate use of antipersonnel mines by illegal armed groups, which have directly affected the civilian population and the Public Force.

Metal detectors, traditionally used in mine location, are devices that are capable of detecting the metallic content of mines and generally present a good level of reliability; However, this same capacity of the equipment implies that on many occasions metals that do not correspond to a mine are detected.

For this reason and because currently improvised explosive devices are installed by narcoterrorist groups and built without metallic elements in many areas, the integration of other technology such as GPR is necessary since this type of radar allows obtaining images of the subsoil giving the possibility of identifying a buried object.

With the execution of this project, the Military Industry will continue to comply with the strategic imperatives of expanding the portfolio of products and markets, developing national capabilities by supporting the training of doctoral and master's students with Social Responsibility, while the country gives an important step in technological development aimed at preserving life by eliminating the threat of mines and improvised explosive devices.
